Starting a user group requires time, effort, leadership, dedication, and vision. However, ask almost any user group leader, and they’ll tell you it’s all worth it. Consider some of these reasons to start a user group. 1. Make friends. You’ve realized some of the awesome potential of technology and how it fits into your life — your families, your hobbies, your school, and more. Meet other people who share your interests and passions (technology and otherwise). 2. Save the day. A lot of people are looking for help. Group leaders can create a forum for helping people with their questions. It’s rewarding to provide these opportunities and answers. 3. Be first. If you’ve searched the online locator and you didn’t find a group near you, you have a chance to make a real difference for your community. You can start something new and different that benefits you and all the group members. 4. Tell your own unique story. Perhaps you know dozens of people in your community who are passionate about video technology and telling stories. Consider working with an established user group to start a smaller group focused entirely on a new digital medium or similar topic. Or, start an entirely new group. 5. Get in the action. User group leaders have tremendous chances to learn more about working with people and leading organizations. Apple, the User Group Advisory Board, and other companies such as Adobe, host events exclusively for user group leaders that are both informative and rewarding. 6. Save money and get cool stuff. Many vendors realize the influencing power of user groups, and vendors give groups and group leaders special offers and discounts. User group leaders receive this information first and can also receive special opportunities to get demo products for their groups. 7. Lead the way. Running a user group requires the ability to motivate, to organize, and to lead. By running a group, you learn more of these skills and gain talent that can be applied to everything else in life. It even makes a great resumé line. 8. Create a network. User group leaders can make important networking contacts in both their local areas and the national user group community. Leaders have found clients, jobs, and more because of their involvement with their group. 9. Tell the world. Most user group leaders are passionate about the potential of technology, and they strongly believe in the best technology available. Share these passions with the uninitiated — show them what they’re missing out on by not experiencing the most exciting technologies. 10. It's just plain fun. There’s something about user groups that makes their leaders spend hours and hours each week organizing and leading. They love it. They love the people they meet and the opportunities that user groups create. Running a user group...it’s just plain fun. Many resources are available to user group leaders. Most importantly, register with Apple and other vendors so you can receive exclusive benefits and tools. Also, take advantage of the many other resources for getting news, meeting other leaders, getting tools, and finding presenters. Register with Apple Register your user group with Apple to receive news, information, resources, tools, access to events, and more. Register with Other Vendors Dozens of companies recognize the value of user groups and offer a variety of resources including speakers, information, and discounts. Check with your favorite companies to see what support they offer specifically to user groups. Apple User Group Leader Bulletin Receive the latest user group news, special offers, and announcements. Only leaders of recognized groups are eligible to receive this Bulletin. User Group News and Events Discover the latest news and events related to user groups, such as activities at Macworld Expo and User Group University. The MUG Center Find coverage of the latest user group news and events at The MUG Center, an independent resource site for Macintosh user groups. Apple Newsletters Get news straight from the source that will keep you up to date on Apple’s latest technologies. Discussion List Join an email list that lets hundreds of user group leaders discuss their successes, strategies, tips, and questions. Contact Us You’re encouraged to share your questions and ideas with the Apple User Group Advisory Board, the Apple Program Manager of Worldwide User Group Relations, and others. Apple Regional Liaisons Apple Regional Liaisons build relationships with user groups in their local areas. Make sure you’re in contact with your Regional Liaison so you can partner with groups in your area. Find Groups Near You Make sure that you’re aware of other groups in your area. Consider partnering for larger presentations or other regional events. The User Group Report The User Group Report is a QuickTime audio stream that features current interviews and news that relate to the user group community. Request Merchandise Is your groups hosting a special event? Your group's ambassador may request giveaways such as t-shirts or posters on Apple Sales Web. (Subject to availability.) Apple Sales Web User groups can access training materials, product information, and Apple merchandise by logging into Apple Sales Web. Each recognized Apple Ambassador receives access to ASW. If you have questions about this service, we likely have the answers. The MUG Store The Macintosh User Group (MUG) Store is a special program for Apple User Group members only. Members can purchase Apple factory-refurbished computers and used Macs, receive special offers from third-party vendors, and find closeout or discontinued merchandise. User group leaders receive access information in the monthly Apple User Group Bulletin. Contact your group’s Ambassador for more information. Other Companies Several companies are interested in sending promotional and demonstration materials to user groups. Stay tuned to the Apple User Group Bulletin for discount and sponsor information. Apple Consultants Network Members of the Apple Consultants Network are often excited to present to user groups. These experts can provide dynamic presentations, up-to-date information, and access to some of the latest technology. Create partnerships with ACN members in your area. Retail Stores Apple is opening dozens of its own retail stores around the United States. Meet with the manager of a store in your area to discuss ways you can work together. If you need help, write to usergroups@apple.com. Apple Resellers Apple authorized resellers also enjoy creating partnerships with local user groups. Apple Specialists or other resellers in your area may help with presenters and equipment. Also, many CompUSAs feature Apple-badged employees who would like to learn more about your group. Local Universities and Schools Consider inviting students, faculty, or administrators to present at your meeting. Not only would these presenters do a great job, but they could also promote your group to the school. Other Companies Many companies send presenters to user groups whenever possible. Others can send demonstration materials and scripts that can help you offer exciting, informative meetings. Your Group Often, some of the best presentations are from your own user group members. They can use resources from Apple available through Apple Sales Web, or they can showcase their own material. The MUG Center The MUG Center, an independent resource site for Macintosh user groups has many great tools for groups. How do I start a user group? Look at our list of resources and our information specific to campus groups. Browse all of the information available at The MUG Center. Read Inprise’s excellent guide to starting a user group. What does it take to start a group? To start, all it takes is a couple people with a lot of passion. Get your friends involved, and start having fun as you discover the possibilities. Why would I want to start a group? Instant friends, discounts, and making a difference in your community are just a few of the reasons. Check out a list of many more benefits. How do we create a name and logo? When thinking about a name or logo, be creative. Talk with other leaders about the possibilities. Create a unique brand identity for your group. Make your logo your own, which means not including the Apple logo or Apple trademarked images. Apple does provide an approved logo that groups can use to identify themselves as recognized Apple user groups. The recognized Apple user group Ambassador can obtain these signature files along with the usage guidelines from Apple Sales Web (part L27741A-US). How do I get my group into Apple’s user group program? You must apply to be in the program. 1. Click on Register a New Group. 2. Fill out the Group Profile and submit. 3. Fill out the Contact Profile and submit. 4. Wait patiently. New group approvals sometimes take a few weeks. So, once approved, are we an official Apple User Group? No, you are a recognized Apple user group. There is no such thing as an official Apple user group. Apple user groups are independent organizations not authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by Apple. We recognize your value, encourage your efforts, and look forward to working with you. What’s the best way to stay informed about Apple user group happenings? Subscribe to the Apple User Group Bulletin, a monthly email publication. How can I improve an existing group? Explore The MUG Center for ideas and join Apple’s user group email discussion list for help from your peers. I hear there’s a resource DVD sent to user groups. How can I get one? The Apple Ambassador for each registered user group may order this resource from Apple Sales Web for a small fee. We send one per group — no exceptions — and back issues cannot be sent. Most of the materials included in the mailings are available online via Apple Sales Web. Contact your group leaders if you would like to become your group’s Apple Ambassador so you receive the mailings and can access Apple Sales Web. What’s an Apple Ambassador? It’s a role assigned to one individual from each user group in the Apple database. This person may order the resource mailing and is considered Apple’s primary contact for that group. How do I become my group’s Apple Ambassador? You must be assigned this role in the Apple user group database by the leaders of your user group. Contact them if you are interested. I’m a group leader and have no idea whom our ambassador is. How do I find out? You need to access your database record and look at your group’s contact list to see who has been assigned the Apple Ambassador role. If you don’t know how to access your database record, you need to request your group’s name and password by emailing us at usergroups@apple.com. Can user group members use Apple Sales Web? No, access to Apple Sales Web is for only registered groups’ Apple Ambassadors I’m having technical trouble with Apple Sales Web. Who can help? Please email a detailed description of the problem to asw@apple.com. Can I get special deals on Apple products as a user group? Yes, user group members can purchase Apple products and other third-party software and hardware through the MUG Store. Points are accumulated by the groups that can be redeemed for Apple merchandise or equipment. Check with group leaders for login information that is sent in the Apple User Group Bulletin. Contact the MUG Store with questions about ordering as a user group member. My group wants to distribute Apple software. Can we? Some software may be legally distributed by user groups, while other software may not. To legally distribute Apple software, you need to download, sign, and send in a User Group Software Distribution Agreement. Mac OS updates may not be distributed. My group wants to use the Apple logo for promotional purposes. Can we? Recognized Apple user groups may use special signature lines that include the Apple logo. The groups Apple ambassador may download these files along with usage guidelines from Apple Sales Web (part L27741A-US). Be sure to follow the included guidelines for usage. How do I get a speaker to present at my user group? Please check our Leader Resources page for more information about presenters. Do you support user groups outside the United States? Yes, some user group programs are available worldwide: Apple User Group Bulletin Apple User Group Discussion List Apple Sales Web Macworld User Group Events Apple Regional Liaisons Others are available only in the US and Canada. Some things we can’t do worldwide for red-tape, legal reasons, and sometimes we just don’t have the bandwidth. User groups outside the US are advised to contact their local Apple office, introduce themselves, and build a relationship there. How do I network with other user group leaders? Join the Apple User Group Discussion list, introduce yourself, and network with leaders from around the world. I have some input on Apple’s user group program but don’t feel comfortable discussing it directly with Apple. What can I do? Send your thoughts to the Apple User Group Advisory Board. The advisory board is responsible for gathering feedback from the user group community and providing counsel to Apple on issues related to its user group program. Contact them at ugab@mac.com. Why should I bother updating my group’s record in the database? If you don’t, potential members won’t be able to find your group in the User Group Locator. You may also miss out on exclusive opportunities for user groups. Here’s how we use data in the user group database: Online locator: Apple points customers to the online locator at the user group website to find local groups. We refer them using email autoresponders, links on the Apple website, via customer support, and on collateral found in product boxes, stores, and trade shows. Customers access data direct from the database when searching for user groups, so please keep your records accurate. Apple customers are only referred to public groups. Random opportunities: Occasionally we get requests from internal Apple folks or other vendors who want help contacting the user groups. They typically offer the groups special discounts, partnership opportunities, vendor presentations, free merchandise, feedback on programs, etc. If your group information isn’t accurate, you won’t be asked to participate. All opportunities are carefully screened to protect your privacy. Internal advocacy: It’s far easier to justify resources for Apple user groups when we have accurate information about who they are, how many customers they touch, and the services they provide in their local communities. Any other questions? Check out other questions and answers or contact us. Why Start a User Group? How to Run a User Group Questions about Leading a Group |

-------------------- "an apple a day keeps windows away"

-------------------- "an apple a day keeps windows away"

cheers, sh ps: MacOS contine si componente non-apple (chiar kenrel-ul). |
